The use of the "Whale" backbender is an excellent way of supporting backbend poses. Complete relaxation in the pose is possible and the the backbender is wide enough so that the entire back and spine are fully supported whilst stretching, without placing stress on other joints. The chest and lungs are expanded during use which allows for easier breathing. Using the backbender for support can also assist in the relief of sciatic or other spinal pain. The differing curves at each end of the backbender enables the backbender to be used to your specific requirement. Please see the feedback in red at the bottom of the page from one of my previous customers that may assist you in your decision regarding the use or purchase of a backbender, many thanks to Rob for the information.
The use of a round bar as a foot support at the low end of the backbender also doubles as a very convenient handhold when using the backbender with the head positioned at the low end.
This version of backbender also allows for long forward bends. A dowel which is supplied (shown alongside the backbender in the main photo) can be used in the hole cut-outs drilled in the side of the backbender. Alternatively, you can also use yoga straps.
The backbender is very strongly constructed and no metal fastenings are visible. Finished with a clear hard oil coating which gives a very durable natural light coloured finish and protects the wood.
Note: If you are taller than 180 cms, we would recommend that you order the extra large backbender.

Hi Alan
I purchased a backbending bench from you in January. I have been lying on it daily for the past two months and have had some excellent results so I jut thought I'd say thanks to you. It has released an enormous amount of tension from my shoulders, bringing greater freedom to my upper back in particular and also more movement in the neck. It has also lengthened my groins which has helped to relax my stomach considerably. I will be using it for a lifetime no doubt. It has greatly improved my yoga and daily life. I think that more yoga should be done passively using supports.
A little more about what problems I was having. Lack of freedom in the shoulders due to stress and resulting in... stress! This led to lack of freedom in the neck which was tight, and which I'm sure resulted in more tension in the face and brain, hindering clearer thinking. The ability to bend backwards, accessing in particular the upper part of the back with the support, has helped to release all of this stress. It really has the effect of releasing these areas. Quite amazing.
Many many thanks
Rob
